The Policy Project is committed to providing a volunteer environment that is free from unlawful harassment, discrimination, and inappropriate conduct of any kind. We value and uphold the dignity of all individuals and expect everyone involved in our work—volunteers, staff, partners, and others—to conduct themselves in a manner that is respectful and inclusive.
Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination
Discrimination or harassment based on any legally protected characteristic is strictly prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: race, color, religion, creed, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, ancestry, marital status, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law. This policy applies to all interactions within The Policy Project’s operations, including volunteer activities, trainings, community events, communications, and external partnerships.
Prohibited Conduct
Harassment and discrimination can take many forms and may be verbal, physical, visual, or written (including digital and online communications). The following types of behavior are strictly prohibited:
Unwelcome sexual advances or comments, sexual jokes, requests for sexual favors, or suggestive gestures
Lewd, vulgar, or obscene language or behavior
Derogatory remarks, slurs, jokes, or visual materials targeting any protected category
The intentional or persistent refusal to use a person’s correct name or pronouns after being informed of their preference
Bullying, intimidation, or creating a hostile environment through actions or words
Unwanted physical contact or threats
Use of The Policy Project’s communication systems or events to share offensive or discriminatory content
Complaint and Reporting Procedure
Any volunteer who experiences or witnesses harassment or discrimination should report the conduct immediately to their staff supervisor or another staff member they feel comfortable with. We strongly encourage early reporting to ensure that issues can be addressed promptly and effectively.
Reports may also be made directly to leadership by contacting info@thepolicyproject.org or a member of the leadership team. All reports will be taken seriously, handled confidentially to the extent possible, and investigated appropriately. The Policy Project will not tolerate retaliation against anyone who reports harassment or discrimination in good faith.
If it is determined that a volunteer has violated this policy, The Policy Project may take appropriate corrective action, which could include ending the individual’s volunteer relationship with the organization.
Commitment to Inclusion and Safety
At The Policy Project, we are committed to maintaining a volunteer culture that reflects our core values: dignity and opportunity. We appreciate the contributions of our volunteers and are committed to ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.
