While The Policy Project does not work directly with youth, volunteers may occasionally interact with minors during events, school visits, or other public activities. All representatives of The Policy Project are expected to maintain appropriate, professional boundaries and ensure that interactions with minors are safe, respectful, and observable by others.

The following conduct is prohibited:

  • Being alone with a minor in a private or isolated space.

  • Transporting a minor without prior approval from a parent/guardian and a supervisor.

  • Engaging in physical contact that could be misinterpreted (e.g., hugging, touching).

  • Communicating privately with minors outside of official TPP-related purposes.

  • Sharing contact information of minors.

  • Taking photos or videos of minors without permission from a parent/guardian.

  • Using inappropriate or offensive language or content in the presence of minors.

When interacting with youth, follow these best practices:

  • Ensure two adults are present whenever possible during interactions with minors. This provides transparency, ensures accountability, and helps protect both the minor and the adult.

  • Always conduct interactions with minors in public, well-supervised settings.

  • If a minor initiates physical contact (e.g., a hug), redirect to a wave or high-five when appropriate.

  • Report any unusual or concerning behavior (by staff, volunteers, or others) immediately to your supervisor.

  • Be especially mindful of power dynamics and the influence adult representatives may have in school or community settings.

If your role includes core responsibilities that involve regular interaction with youth, you will be required to complete a background check before engaging in that work.

Any concerns about inappropriate conduct or boundary violations involving minors must be reported immediately to a supervisor. The Policy Project will report suspected abuse or misconduct to the appropriate authorities when required.
